Political index

Each district profile includes a political index number which represents the relative Republican/Democrat voting strength in the district. The Republican index is constructed from the performance of Republican candidates in selected recent elections in the district.

The political index used for 2014 was constructed from election results in these major elections, weighted equally:

• 2008 Presidential Election
• 2010 Ohio Governor's Election
• 2010 Ohio Attorney General's Election
• 2012 Presidential Election
• 2012 U.S. Senate Election

The political index used for 2016 was constructed from election results in these major elections, weighted equally:

• 2010 Ohio Governor's Election
• 2010 Ohio Attorney General's Election
• 2012 Presidential Election
• 2012 U.S. Senate Election
• 2014 Ohio Secretary of State Election
• 2014 Ohio Attorney General’s Election

As with any political index, this measure is simply an indicator of past performance. It alone does not predict the outcome of an election. Other factors that contribute to the outcomes of elections are the popularity and position of the candidates, fundraising capabilities of the candidates, and performance at the top of the ticket. The index is helpful, however, in determining the overall prospects for candidates of any political party.

These maps are intended as a general reference to the location of election districts in the State of Ohio.
